Update: Ljubljana, Slovenia

The start to an epic road trip. We flew into the capital city Ljubljana and arrived around 6pm. We took a redeye flight out of Pittsburgh arrived in Dublin at 10am then flew to Zurich and then to Slovenia. We were exhausted and just wanted to eat and sleep. We checked into our hotel, grabbed a bite to eat and then crashed out by 9pm. After a 12 nap we were up and ready to explore. This tiny country doesn’t offer much in the way of tourist attractions but it still has a unique laid back charm. It’s a very green eco friendly city with everyone riding bike and scooters or walking and jogging. We only planned 2 nights here so we set out to see the highlights. Our first stop was the Ljubljana Castle set on top of a small hill in the center of the city. The castle has been renovated and remodeled multiple times so now it’s more of a museum/cultural center. The inside has recessed lighting in the floor, metal handrails and glass doors and dividers everywhere. The modern touches take away from the authenticity of the castle but not from the experience. Inside there is an interesting puppet museum worth a quick look and the roof offers 360 degree of the city and surrounding mountains. After the castle we walked around the city and had lunch at a street side café. The people watching was good but we didn’t really enjoy the food. Same for dinner. So far we haven’t found the local foods that we love yet.  I even tried Doner which was nowhere near as good as in Turkey. There’s a river that runs through the city so after dinner we walked along the river and enjoyed the relaxing vibe of Ljubljana. One thing we noticed was after work everyone was out walking their dogs. What was so interesting is that we saw dozens of dogs but no 2 from the same breed. Although there isn’t too much to do here it was definitely worth the stop and a nice easy way to start this trip.
