The flight into Cusco was maybe the best approach I have ever had in a plane. The mountains are so high that you are landing in the clouds amongst the mountain peaks. It was so beautiful. Our flight got into Cusco at 8:30 in the morning and our room wasn’t ready so we headed out for some Coca leaf tea to ward off any altitude sickness. After training at altitude back home neither of us felt much effect. We came prepared. From there we wandered to the main square in town and were treated to an Easter morning parade and celebration. After that we walked around some more exploring several weekend markets. The buildings and architecture here were so cool. It’s like stepping back in time. After checking in to our hotel we realized we had already walked several miles and decided to take a nap. Once we were recharged we headed out to try Cuy, AKA Guinea Pig ! It’s a traditional dish here and one of two new proteins we had on our must try list. The other is Alpaca, coming soon. Although it is served all over town we wanted to try it at Cusco’s best Cuy restaurant. We ordered one to share and we ordered a chicken dish called Aji de Galina. The Cuy arrived dressed up with a hat and a 5 star presentation just for pictures then the waiter takes it back and cuts it up for you. It was very gamey and some parts of the meat was slimy. We think it was slimy due to how it was roasted. The fried version looked drier. Alyssa liked the meat. To me it was OK but I think like the Cobra in Vietnam it was fun to try once but I wouldn’t want it as part of my regular diet. The chicken dish on the other hand was amazing. Shredded chicken in a smooth creamy sauce with chili, cheese and walnuts. It seems I take one dish away from every country that I can’t live without and this is Perus masterpiece. After that amazing dinner we found our way to a hookah bar and spent the night relaxing!
