We decided to skip the capital city of San Pedro Sula because even the locals are afraid to go there because of the insanely high crime rate but we couldn’t resist visiting the Copan Ruins in a small Mayan village a few hours from the border. The Copan Ruins are spread over 15 Sq km. The Ruins are still being excavated and you can see international teams working everywhere. At this point you can explore 1.5 Sq km of ruins. Some are completely uncovered and others are being discovered now. Our guide was a Mayan descendant who was full of knowledge and pride making for a great tour. Aside from the Ruins the site is also famous for being on a bird migration route so it’s a bird watchers heaven. We spotted the national bird of Honduras, the Macua several times. After wandering around for hours we caught a ride back to the Mayan village and spent the rest of our time soaking in the authentic vibe and eating local foods. We have one more country left on this Central America trip and so far we have not been disappointed. The weather, nature, people, food, culture and history have been amazing.
