The weather was calling for clouds and a chance of a shower in Barcelona so we postponed our beach day and instead caught a bus to the tiny country of Andorra. This little gem is nestled inside Spain near the border with France. The bus ride from Barcelona to La Vella, Andorra’s capital was simply stunning taking us through the Pyrenees Mountains. Before we even got to the city, we were regretting not planning more time here. We could have gotten into some amazing hiking. As soon as we got off the bus, we started walking the city in search of all it’s tourist highlights. We stopped first in the oldest part of the city and went into a church where we came across children singing to a pipe organ. As we walked to our next stop we found a McDonalds with some unique chicken sandwiches. We only tried one as we were saving room for some of Andorra’s local goodies so don’t miss my McDonalds world tour blog explaining all about McDonalds in Europe. Next we came across a statue designed by Salvador Dali called the Melting Clock. A nice little photo stop. It was only feet from the next stop, a uniquely designed bridge connecting four roads over a river. From there we found several smaller bridges with architectural and historical importance. The one thing that stood out to us as we wandered the city’s streets was the building designs. The city only had one modern glass building ( a spa) but it seemed as though there was no continuity to the designs outside of the Old City section. One building was like a rock castle, next to a German design, then an English looking building then a Gothic one. It was fun to see but made no sense. We walked from one side of the city to the other where we found a viewpoint. By now we needed a rest so we got some ice cream and an ice tea and found the city’s central park where we laid out on a blanket people watching. Having seen most of the tourist sites we decided to head out of town for a hike we had heard about. The city is in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains and if you climb up a steep ramp several hundred feet there is path along a ridge that is covered in shade and gives you views of the city from above. After our relaxing stroll we headed back to town for our Andorran dinner of local sausages and a suckling pig. We really enjoyed the city but are really looking forward to returning when it’s a little cooler to get out and do some hiking around the country’s mountains and rivers.
