Over the last 5 years more and more discount airlines have popped up making air travel cheaper then ever before and in some cases as cheap as bus or train travel. These budget airlines are present now on every continent. And several of them are now crossing the oceans making it possible to travel to Europe from the US for under $200. Once in Europe you can catch a flight from Brussells to Venice for under $20. These airlines cut the cost in several areas giving you a no-frills experience at a no-frills rate. Drinks and snacks aren’t offered on short flights for starters. Your sure not to have Wi-Fi on board and probably not even a port to charge your devices. There will be no interactive TV in the headrest in front of you loaded with movies, music and games. The food, drinks and airline souvenirs are all going to be super expensive even by airline standards. Another reason the flights are cheaper is that the flights will be in and out of smaller airports usually a bit further from cities and touristy areas. The airport fees are less for the airlines resulting in savings for you. Just keep in mind the cost of getting from the airport to where you’re going may be a little more than flying into a country’s main airport. Something else to look into with these airlines is baggage cost. The planes are usually smaller with much less storage space. A flight from Venice to Palermo was $36 but because I didn’t check in my bag more then 2 hours before takeoff they charged me $70. For shorter flights I highly recommend discount airlines. For longer flights just remember you get what you pay for and maybe that 14+ hour flight to Indonesia might just be a little more enjoyable with 3 square meals, leg room, Wi-Fi and movies.
