We traveled by private taxi from Wadi Rum to Petra, dropped our bags off and headed out to explore the town in search of warm clothes. Our plan was to explore Petra by night. It’s a small show they put on 3 nights a week where you hike to the Treasury and listen to a story as they light up the Monument. It’s 70° during the day but it drops to the 50°at night so we got Alyssa a jacket and me a hat and in we went. The trail through the canyon was poorly lit by candles and the path had rocks you couldn’t see. We saw people falling and stumbling the whole way. After a half hour of hiking you reach the Treasury and are seated for 30 minutes until the “show” starts. The show consists of lights changing color against the wall and 20 minutes of flute playing followed by a 10 minute story containing no real info. After that you have 20 minutes to take pics before the sketchy half hour hike back. It costs $25 per person and isn’t included in your Jordan Pass or Petra ticket.
Is it worth it…. honestly…No. it’s a gimmick. It was cool to see it all lit up but pushing a crowd that size through a dark canyon just to see lights was not worth the money. I’m glad we did it but I wouldn’t go again or recommend it. Tomorrow we will return at 6am to do Petra the right way! Even taking pictures in the dark was rough but Alyssa nailed pretty well.
